What is Cardiac Calcification Syndrome?

Cardiac calcification syndrome is a progressive pathological process in which calcium salts deposit in heart valves, coronary arteries and the myocardium. Aging, chronic kidney disease and metabolic disorders accelerate this process.

Aortic valve calcification is the most common form and may cause severe aortic stenosis. Mitral annular calcification predisposes older patients to mitral regurgitation and conduction abnormalities.

The coronary artery calcium score (CAC) is a valuable marker in cardiovascular risk assessment. Treatment addresses the underlying cause and may require surgical or transcatheter intervention for advanced valvular involvement.

Early diagnosis and risk factor control can slow progression and prevent complications.

Symptoms

Dyspnea on exertion
Chest pain or pressure
Palpitations and irregular heartbeat
Fatigue and exercise intolerance
Syncope or dizziness
Ankle edema

Risk Factors

Advanced age (over 65)
Chronic kidney disease and dialysis
Diabetes and hyperphosphatemia
Hyperparathyroidism
Excessive vitamin D intake
Family history of early calcification

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Worsening exertional dyspnea or chest pain
  • Episodes of syncope or presyncope
  • New cardiac symptoms in known kidney disease

Treatment Methods

01
Correction of the underlying metabolic disorder (phosphorus, calcium, PTH)
02
Statin therapy and cardiovascular risk management
03
TAVI or surgical valve replacement for severe valve stenosis
04
Phosphate binders in dialysis patients
05
Regular echocardiographic and CT follow-up
