What is Atrial Flutter Ablation?

Typical atrial flutter is a macroreentrant arrhythmia that passes through the cavotricuspid isthmus in the right atrium. Sawtooth flutter waves are characteristic on ECG. A ventricular rate of approximately 150 bpm is typically seen with 2:1 conduction.

Cavotricuspid isthmus ablation is a curative treatment with a success rate of over 95%. It is recommended as first-line therapy in recurrent flutters and in cases resistant to antiarrhythmic drug therapy.

Symptoms

Palpitations
Shortness of breath
Dizziness
Exercise intolerance
Presyncope or syncope
Chest pain

Risk Factors

Hypertension
Coronary artery disease
Heart failure
COPD
Previous cardiac surgery
Concurrent atrial fibrillation (common)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Recurrent palpitation episodes
  • Flutter resistant to rate control medications
  • Flutter with hemodynamic instability
  • Anticoagulation decision (CHA2DS2-VASc assessment)

Treatment Methods

01
Cavotricuspid isthmus ablation (curative — 95% success)
02
Procedure duration 45-90 minutes
03
Confirmation of bidirectional block
04
Anticoagulation (at least 4 weeks after ablation)
05
Long-term anticoagulation decision when AF is concurrent
