What is Adult Congenital Heart Disease Management?

Adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) refers to adults who had congenital heart disease repaired or palliated in childhood. With advances in treatment, most of these patients now reach adulthood and require long-term follow-up.

Typical problems include residual shunts, obstructions, regurgitations, Fontan circulation complications, pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmias, systemic right ventricular failure, endocarditis and pregnancy-related risks.

ACHD centers provide advanced echocardiography, cardiac MRI/CT, hemodynamic follow-up, electrophysiology evaluation and, when indicated, reoperation or transcatheter intervention.
