PRP Therapy

PRP therapy — application of plasma obtained from the patient's own platelets for the scalp and skin.

Injection of platelet-rich plasma obtained by separating the patient's blood by centrifugation into the scalp or skin.

Indication

  • Early-to-moderate stage androgenetic alopecia (scalp PRP)
  • Selected alopecia cases requesting adjunctive support to medical therapy
  • Adjunctive application for temporary skin surface refreshment
  • When supporting temporary tissue healing after acne is desired
  • As a supportive option to non-surgical hair treatment

Preparation

  • Adequate fluid intake and a light meal before the procedure
  • Physician approval for the use of aspirin, NSAIDs, or blood thinners
  • No active infection, eczema, or open wound at the procedure site
  • No skin peeling or laser treatment performed in the last 2 weeks
  • On the procedure day, the scalp should be clean and free of cosmetics

How it's performed

  1. 10-20 mL of blood is drawn from the patient under sterile conditions
  2. The blood is centrifuged in closed-system tubes to separate platelet-rich plasma
  3. The application area is prepared with topical anesthesia or cooling
  4. Plasma is delivered to the scalp or skin via micro-injections
  5. The procedure usually takes 30-45 minutes, and the patient can return to daily life the same day
  6. The treatment protocol is mostly planned as 3-4 sessions at 4-6 week intervals

Post-procedure

  • Washing the scalp and aggressive combing are not recommended for 24 hours after the procedure
  • Hot showers, sauna, and intensive sports are postponed for 1-2 days
  • Response is evaluated with clinical photography and trichoscopy
  • Maintenance sessions may be recommended every 6-12 months based on individual response
  • If on medical therapy (minoxidil/finasteride), it is recommended not to discontinue

Risks

  • Temporary pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site
  • Mild bruising and tenderness (usually resolves within a few days)
  • Rarely, headache or transient scalp edema
  • Very rare risk of infection (minimized with sterile application)
  • The level of evidence for PRP's effectiveness on hair and skin is limited; response varies from person to person and improvement may not be observed in all patients

FAQ

Does PRP guarantee my hair will regrow?

No. PRP is an adjunctive treatment option; in current studies, effectiveness varies from person to person. It is a supportive approach rather than an alternative to medical treatment.

How many sessions are needed?

Generally, 3-4 sessions at 4-6 week intervals at the start, followed by maintenance sessions planned according to individual response.

Is the procedure painful?

Micro-injections are eased with topical anesthesia or cooling. Most patients describe a mild stinging sensation.

Can I return to work the same day?

Mostly yes. Mild redness and tenderness on the scalp resolves within a few hours; daily life can be resumed the same day.
