What is Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn (TTN)?

Transient tachypnea of the newborn is a benign respiratory distress picture characterized by rapid breathing, mild retraction and a 'wet lung' radiograph caused by incomplete absorption of fetal fluid in the lungs during the intrauterine period or at birth.

Elective cesarean delivery, rapid labor, maternal asthma and diabetes, male sex and macrosomia are risk factors. Lack of vaginal compression during birth slows fluid absorption.

Diagnosis is clinical and radiologic; chest radiography shows fluid in the fissures, hyperinflation and interstitial markings. RDS, pneumonia and congenital heart disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

Symptoms

Tachypnea (>60/min) shortly after birth
Mild intercostal retraction
Nasal flaring
Wheezing
Oxygen requirement
Usually resolves within 24-72 hours

Risk Factors

Elective cesarean delivery
Rapid vaginal delivery
Maternal diabetes and asthma
Late preterm delivery
Male sex
Macrosomia

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When tachypnea begins after birth in the newborn
  • When retraction and oxygen need increase
  • When feeding disturbance accompanies
  • In respiratory distress lasting longer than 72 hours
  • Fever or marked suspicion of sepsis

Treatment Methods

01
Pulse oximetry and oxygen when needed
02
Close observation in mild cases
03
Fluid support instead of oral feeding (according to severity of tachypnea)
04
Antibiotic (if infection is suspected)
05
Differential diagnosis with chest X-ray
06
Newborn unit follow-up until symptoms regress
