What is Developmental Delay in Children?

Developmental delay refers to a significant lag below expected levels in motor (gross/fine), language/speech, cognitive, social-emotional, or daily living skills in children under 5. Global developmental delay is observed in two or more areas.

Causes include genetic syndromes (Down, fragile X), prematurity, perinatal asphyxia, intrauterine infections, metabolic diseases, toxins (lead, alcohol), environmental deprivation, and unknown causes.

Standardized developmental tests (Denver II, Bayley, ASQ) and detailed history are used in diagnosis. Early intervention (0-3 years) is critical to take advantage of brain plasticity. A multidisciplinary approach is essential.

Risk Factors

Prematurity and low birth weight
Perinatal asphyxia
Genetic syndromes
Congenital infections (TORCH)
Environmental factors (neglect)
