What is Childhood Type 1 Diabetes: Pump and Continuous Glucose Sensor?

In pediatric Type 1 diabetes treatment, the combination of insulin pump therapy and real-time continuous glucose monitoring (rtCGM) reduces glycemic variability and hypoglycemia risk.

Hybrid closed-loop (HCL) systems automatically adjust basal insulin infusion, but meal boluses are entered manually. These systems provide significant improvement in TIR (time in range) and A1c targets.

Children and their families are trained on carbohydrate counting, correction factor, active insulin time, temporary basal rate adjustments, and alarm management. Tele-education and remote data monitoring have become widespread.

Symptoms

Hyperglycemia episodes
Loss of hypoglycemia awareness
High glycemic variability
DKA risk
Difficulty in school control
Psychosocial stress

Risk Factors

Newly diagnosed childhood Type 1 DM
Frequent hypoglycemia episodes
Loss of hypoglycemia awareness
Failure to achieve target A1c
Insufficient family support
Adolescent control difficulties

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • After new diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes
  • When A1c targets cannot be achieved
  • In frequent hypoglycemia episodes
  • When pump or CGM change is considered
