What is Childhood Anxiety?

Childhood anxiety disorders include separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, specific phobia, and panic disorder. They affect 10-20% of children and can persist into adulthood without treatment.

Anxiety disorders arise from interactions between neurobiological vulnerability and environmental stressors. Functional impairment (school refusal, social avoidance, sleep problems) is the diagnostic hallmark, distinguishing 'normal' developmental fears from disorders.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the evidence-based first-line treatment. Combination with SSRIs is preferred in severe cases.

Symptoms

Excessive fear or worry (disproportionate to age)
Physical symptoms: abdominal pain, headache, palpitations, sweating
Difficulty falling asleep or nightmares
Avoidance of school, social events, or new situations
Excessive resistance to separation from parents
Excessive need for control and perfectionism

Risk Factors

Family history of anxiety or mood disorder
Inhibited (shy) temperament
Bullying or traumatic life events
Parental overprotection
Chronic illness
Academic pressure and high-expectation environment

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When anxiety leads to school absence or social avoidance
  • When physical symptoms persist after medical causes are ruled out
  • When the child cannot participate in daily activities
  • Before parents normalize anxiety as 'adolescent moodiness'

Treatment Methods

01
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): exposure exercises, cognitive restructuring
02
Family-based CBT: parental attitudes and support strategies
03
SSRI (sertraline, fluoxetine): combined with CBT in moderate-severe anxiety
04
School-based intervention: tailored school plan and support
05
Relaxation techniques: deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation
06
Screen and social media management: limiting anxiety-fueling content
