What is Childhood Allergy Immunotherapy?

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is a disease-modifying treatment that develops immune tolerance against the allergen by gradually administering increasing doses to allergic children.

Two routes are used: subcutaneous (SCIT) and sublingual (SLIT); both have been shown effective in controlled trials.

Indications: allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, allergic asthma, hymenoptera venom allergy and food allergy (peanut SLIT); minimum age is generally five years.

Symptoms

Sneezing, itchy nose and runny nose (allergic rhinitis)
Eye itching, redness and watering (allergic conjunctivitis)
Wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath (asthma)
Symptoms increasing in spring-autumn (pollen sensitivity)
Symptoms increasing at home (mite, mould)
Severe reaction with bee or wasp stings

Risk Factors

Family history of atopy
Symptoms persisting more than two years
Multiple allergen sensitivity (mite, pollen, animal dander)
Inadequate response to medical treatment
Frequent exacerbation and emergency admission
Hymenoptera venom allergy and risk of anaphylaxis

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Pediatric allergy specialist evaluation when allergy symptoms persist more than two years
  • Skin prick test or specific IgE measurement for indication
  • When seasonal pollen symptoms are very prominent and persistent
  • After anaphylaxis from bee or wasp sting

Treatment Methods

01
Subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT, three to five years)
02
Sublingual immunotherapy tablet (SLIT, daily, three years)
03
Adrenaline preparation against anaphylaxis risk
04
Medical maintenance treatment (intranasal steroid, antihistamine)
05
Environmental control (mite mattress cover, pollen avoidance)
06
Close follow-up in asthmatic children (FEV1 measurement)
