What is Adenoid Hypertrophy?

Adenoid tissue (nasopharyngeal tonsil) is a mass of lymphoid tissue at the posterior wall of the nasopharynx. It reaches its maximum size between ages 2-7 and shrinks with adolescence. When enlarged, it narrows the nasal airway, leading to nasal obstruction and mouth breathing.

Chronic recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, allergic rhinitis, and gastroesophageal reflux can trigger adenoid hypertrophy. Pressure on the eustachian tube opening leads to recurrent middle ear infections and hearing loss.

If untreated, adenoid hypertrophy that causes obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS) during sleep can lead to attention difficulties, hyperactivity, and growth retardation due to suppression of growth hormone secretion.

Symptoms

Persistent nasal obstruction and mouth breathing
Snoring at night and sleep apnea
Daytime sleepiness and attention difficulty
Recurrent otitis media and decreased hearing
Nasal (through the nose) or hyponasal speech
Adenoid face (long face, open mouth, long lower jaw)

Risk Factors

Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections
Allergic rhinitis
Exposure to passive cigarette smoke
Gastroesophageal reflux
Ages 2-7 (peak period)
Family history of adenoid hypertrophy

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • To an ENT doctor for persistent mouth breathing and snoring
  • Urgently for observed apnea episodes during sleep
  • For recurrent middle ear infections or decreased hearing
  • When growth retardation and attention problems are present

Treatment Methods

01
Medical treatment: nasal corticosteroid sprays (in mild-moderate cases)
02
Adenoidectomy: surgical removal, first-line treatment in severe obstruction
03
Adenotonsillectomy: when adenoids and tonsils enlarge together
04
Ventilation tube (grommets): in recurrent serous otitis media
05
Allergic rhinitis treatment: concurrent allergy management
06
Postoperative follow-up: monitoring of sleep quality and growth
